<p>CHRISTIAN EDUCATOR.
<lb>
<hi rend="bold">JOSEPH C. PRICE,</hi>
<lb>
<hi rend="blockindent">
<lb>A star arose at close of night:
<lb>&apos;tis dark before the dawn;
<lb>A brilliant star, a righteous light,
<lb>Foretoken of the morn&mdash;
<lb>The day when the oppressor&apos;s hand
<lb>Should palsied be throughout the land.
<lb>A man of influence and power,
<lb>Who laid himself with grace,
<lb>Upon the altar of his God,
<lb>An offering for his race.
<lb>E'er prodigal of strength and thought,
<lb>And from his race withholding nought.
<pageinfo>
<controlpgno>0004</controlpgno>
<printpgno>4</printpgno></pageinfo>He cried: &ldquo;If I&apos;d a thousand tongues,
<lb>And each a thunderbolt;
<lb>I&apos;d turn them on in mighty power,
<lb>Like an electric volt;
<lb>I&apos;d send them forth with lightning pace&mdash;
<lb>To help and elevate my race!
<lb>With purpose firm he lived his creed,
<lb>And toiled with might and main,
<lb>Each day more clearly saw the need&mdash;
<lb>Despising worldly gain&mdash;
<lb>He counted not his life too dear
<lb>To spend in raising mortals here.
<lb>The manly form now prostrate lies;
<lb>The flashing eye is dim;
<lb>The hand oft raised for principle,
<lb>Touched by the monster grim,
<lb>Is laid upon the quiet breast,
<lb>The life-work finished&mdash;entered rest.
<lb>The tongue of fire is silent now;
<lb>The loving heart is still;
<lb>The mind surcharged with burning thought,
<lb>Yet loyal to God&apos;s will&mdash;
<lb>Has ceased to plan for mortals here,
<lb>Is active in another sphere.
<pageinfo>
<controlpgno>0005</controlpgno>
<printpgno>5</printpgno></pageinfo>A sense of loss our hearts shall feel:
<lb>Hushed is the sweet voice now;
<lb>While we shall miss his thrilling words.
<lb>To God we humbly bow;
<lb>And thank Him for the sacrifice
<lb>So freely made by Joseph Price.
<lb>His task on earth was finished soon;
<lb>Life&apos;s battle nobly won.
<lb>He rests from labor ere the noon,
<lb>His life race fully run.
<lb>He watches still the conflict here,
<lb>And perfect love has cast out fear.
<lb>He is not dead; but gone to join
<lb>The host from care set free!
<lb>He is not dead; his spirit lives
<lb>Where joys immortal be!
<lb>Where noble souls are victors crowned;
<lb>Where perfect love at last is found.
<lb>Now glorified amid the host,
<lb>Whose names in honor stand;
<lb>Phillips and Garnet, Garrison,
<lb>And all that noble band&mdash;
<lb>Lincoln and Sumner&mdash;heroes brave,
<lb>Who sought to free and help the slave.
<pageinfo>
<controlpgno>0006</controlpgno>
<printpgno>6</printpgno></pageinfo>Yes, there within the pearly gates,
<lb>They wait for you and me;
<lb>Those men who planned that from the curse
<lb>Our people might be free;
<lb>Rejoicing in the broadening day
<lb>When shadows dark should flee away.
<lb>Our hero was a patriot true,
<lb>A messenger of truth:
<lb>Whose words of faith and hope rang out
<lb>Inspiring age and youth.
<lb>His life will inspiration give&mdash;
<lb>Through coming time his influence live!</hi></p>

<lb>Rest in peace, beloved brother,
