PREFACE.In writing this little book upon the two ways of life, the author has the two ways only in view, and they will, he trusts, reach the members of his race, that they may be benefitted thereby. Many scriptures have been quoted by him, to sustain all who shall become a reader of this little book.

The subject being so broad, he only touched its particular points, trusting that more able hands will, in the future, take up this subject and give it a more systematic and extensive treatment. He sends this little volume to his race for their profit, honor and glory in Christ Jesus.J. W. Mayes.

THE TWO WAYS.SECTION 1.Keep Out of the WayThen Keep in the Way

Sunday, February 23,1896.11 A.M.

We want our readers to learn to keep out of the way of sin and its companions, and to shun all manner of evil, for we read in Psalms, chapter 1: "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord: and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season: his leaf also shall not wither: and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish."

We want the reader to note what it is to sin and then to be a sinner. To sin, in its primary sense, is, to depart, or to wander. It is the voluntary departure of the moral agent from a known rule of rectitude or duty, described by God; any voluntary transgression of the divine law, or violation of a divine command; a wicked act, iniquity. Sin is either a positive act, in which a known divine law is violated, or it is the voluntary neglect to obey a positive divine command, or rule of duty clearly implied in such a command. Sin comprehends not actions only, but neglect of known duty: all evil thoughts, purposes, words and desires, whatever is contrary to God's command or his law. See 1 John 3 ch., Matt. 15, James 4. We can assure you that whomsoever may come in contact, or touch these forbidden fruits shall not stand in the day of judgment. Neither shall they be admitted into the gates of pearl, where there is no pain, nor death to trouble those who lean their lives upon the Savior's breast. You can see sin approaching in many ways: in the saloon we see the very picture of sin as it invites men, women and children to come in and sup the bitter drugs of an everlasting hell. Oh! yes it invites the high, the low, the rich, the poor, great and small to come and partake of that miserable cup that has dragged hundreds and thousands; yes, millions have gone to that horrible and damnable pit, where not one has or will ever return. Reader will you keep out of the way. Yes we see sin as it comes to us by the way of gambling, with cards, dice and many other ways too numerous for us to mention, but we see thousands, we may say millions that are traveling the broad road of eternal night by the way of this sin. Both men and women, fathers and mothers, leading their sons, daughters and little babes down: yea, down to hell. Oh! fathers and mothers we call to thee, with the spirit of God to help us to say unto thee: "stop! stop! and listen to the gospel call." Remember that our Savior has said for of such (little babes) is the Kingdom of Heaven: yet you will lead them astray. We see many fathers down upon their knees, not only in the six days God has given them to prepare daily bread for themself and family, but we can view them on the blessed Sabbath morning as they kneel down to pray: we answer to play a game of marbles with little Johnnie or Mary, thus learning them the first step to the card table, then to the saloon, then to crimes, from thence to the prison walls or to the gallows, then we hear father and mother of the victim, say I can't see how my son has reached this end. We will answer if you look well to the past life and see how you have packed the vocabulary of your son and 00055daughter you can soon tell why he or she has been caused to enter into these horrible crimes. Oh! fathers and mothers, we again call unto you with the trumpet of the Lord to stop! take these little boys and girls of yours by the hand, say unto them come, children, let us give this day to the Lord in praise and thanksgiving. Dear fathers and mothers we call unto thee again for the little minds that you are to train up in nurture and admiration of the Lord, for the sake of Christ Jesus, we say keep out of the way, for broad is the way that leads to hell, and many there are to travel therein without you leading the little children in that dark and endless hell. Will you think and keep out of the way. Oh! listen, if any of you lack for wisdom let him ask it of God, see James 1. He that gathered little had no lack. See Ex. 16. The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, Ps. 34. You may see more light now as we have been pointed to God, if we lack for wisdom let us ask it of God, that we may be able to train up the young minds that are rendered unto our care. May the spirit of the Lord press further and deeper this work upon every mind that has the care of their own or some poor orphan child, and lead them to the Savior's waiting arms. Again we see that, "he that gathered little had no lack;" what we need is to gather more of that loving zeal that will cause us to take greater and deeper interests in the young minds, to cultivate them in that way which will cause our hearts to leap forth and rejoice in Holy Ghost, We need to gather our children in our homes and around our fireside and teach them them the way we would have them to go, teach them to obey both their father in heaven and on earth: yes, teach them the ten commandments and the Lord's prayer. We have visited many homes where neither father, mother, nor children knew the Lord's prayer; we have read the Bible to them, sang and prayed with, and for them, that they will be gathered in to the ark where they would not be drowned by the great floods of sin and all of its combined forces, that hell should not make its prey out of those bodies which were prepared by the hand of the Lord. Oh! yes, we need help in Macedonia, that we may keep out of the way. May the time soon roll around that all men will keep out of the way. What the reader should do is to keep the way open so as to let his way be lost in the way of God's Now let us see about this young lion that suffers for hunger, when the lioness has gone out in search of prey, or food for her young, they become faint and hungry before she can return to their rescue: if this be so, of the wild beast of the forest, how much more should our children 00066whom God has blest with a more beautiful and bright talent; then we should not wonder that our dear little children should want to keep out of the way. Let us again say to the parents: take care of those little ones that play about your knees. We would say more upon this sinful act, but, for the many others, we will move on to them. We shall only touch the subject just enough to let the light shine through the curtain. What we want is to keep out of the way, then keep in the way.

But, let us now take up the characters that stand, walk and sit with the sinners. They are not only in the seats of the sinners, but get in their way and partake of the same cup with them. Jesus has said: "not everyone that say unto me Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of heaven," [so true are these words]. But he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven--see Matt. 7-21. In this sermon you can see that Jesus plainly described that character who has so many circumstances that he or she cannot attend prayer meeting, class meeting, no not even public worship on the Sabbath day; they wilfully neglect the means of grace, and when they come to the house of God they cannot sit still until the preacher has delivered to them the message sent through him, to them, by God, and when the benediction has been said they then are ready to kick, like unto the wild ass when the rider has thrown the saddle across his back and has mounted therein, with the spurs on his feet and whip in his hand, then the ass began to kick, but he is rode just the same as if he had not kicked at all. Just the way of this character in the church of God. The preacher with the spur and whip of Christ Jesus. (the gospel), he began to spur and whip sin, so heavy, deep and hard, until this character cannot be still; there is something about the church that does not suit him, the seats are not made to suit him and the paper has not been put up just to his notion, or it is either too hot or too cold for him or them, they must go out of doors or go to the stove, they must be seen; if not one thing, it is another, there is something in the sermon that does not suit at all, the preacher has said things that was not right for them; they go from church mad with the preacher, officers and all the rest of the members. Why is this? Let us answer: because the preacher has rode the ass colt into Jerusalem with the spur and the whip of the gospel of Christ Jesus and never failing to use the means, (gospel), that such characters need, they become offended, going to leave the church and join another, this done to see who will say: "Oh! please don't leave us; we can't do without you." Still they have not 00077paid one cent of the general funds and pastor's salary, they never think of such, and the officer may speak to them about it, then they begin to rear, some will curse and swear, let the preacher speak to them, you will hear them say: "Oh! my circumstances will not let me, if I could I would. Brother B., you know I love my church." Let us answer: "No they don't love the church." They are like an old sister whom we read of, had been in church for 15 years; one day she invited the pastor home to dinner with her, he went, and while sitting at the dinner table she remarked: "Brother D., I have been a member of the church for fifteen years, and what do you think it cost me." Brother D. remarks: "Well, my sister, I have no idea how much; but a great deal I suppose." She said "Well, sir, it has cost me 15 cents." The likeness of many others that are trying to get to heaven "on the flowery bed of ease, while others fought to win the prize, and sail through bloody seas." This character can be found in the theatres, billiard rooms standing around the gambling table; they never play, but they hold stakes; they never bet but they will lay or bound you that A. will beat B. out should A. beat D. out, you can hear them with great laughter: I told you so. Give me my money, if I had lost you would have taken up the money. Still they don't bet, but they just lay $500 or $10.00 that this or that will be done. Oh! hark, listen, we cry with all our soul, mind and strength, and with power from above: will you keep out of the way, then keep in the way. Sin comes in many shades, forms and ways, but we must keep the way of the Lord. Remember therefore from whence thou art falling, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.--See Rev. 2-5. This shows plainly that if we neglect the known rule, or the divine command, that we just do the first work over again. We shall not take up this subject, but let us see about sin and her way. "Good Lord, deliver us from deceitful tongues and living lips," this is the voice of the Psalmist: this may seem strange, yet it is true. We can see sin even among the divines. We must remember that sin is original or actual. Actual sin, above defined, is the act of the moral agent in violating a known rule or duty. We should learn that original sin, as generally understood, is native depravity of heart; that want of conformity of heart to the divine will, that corruption of nature or deterioration of the moral character of man, which is supposed to be effect Adam's apostasy, which manifests itself in the moral agents by positive acts of disobedience 00088to the divine will, or by the voluntary neglect to comply with the express command of God, which requires that we should love God with all the heart, and soul, and strength, and mind, and our neighbor as ourselves. This native depravity, or alienation of affection from God, and his law, is supposed to be what the apostle calls the carnal mind, which is enmity against God, and is therefore denominated sin or sinfulness.

Reader, let us keep out of the way. As the writer is one among the divines, we can see clearly by the eve of faith that sin creeps in through the divines, carries off the shepherd and causes the flock to wander far away from the fold of God, and the wolf of hell gets in among the sheep and destroys many, if not the old sheep; he falls upon the young lambs and carry them away into captivity, while the shepherd stands off upon a barren mountain and sees them plunge into that damnable pit of hell: while he stands quaking, shivering and trembling over the very brink of damnation himself. Shepherds gone, flocks wandering about for food, and failing to find it they then are lost for the want of a true shepherd to feed the flock or place food within their reach. As I am one of this number, let us tell the reader that "We are just a little shepherd,And feed my master's sheep,And on the hills of Zion,I with them, long to keep."

We must as divines, leaders must, be awaken to this end, and keep out of the way

Well did Charles Wesley write when he wrote these lines to the minister of the holy word. Oh may you catch the sound of the word. Listen: "Jesus the truth and power of divine,Send forth the messengers of thine;Their hands confirm, their hearts inspire,And touch their lips with hallowed fire.Be thou their mouth and wisdom, Lord,Thou, by the hammer of thy word,The rocky hearts in pieces break,And bid the sons of thunder speak. To those who would their Lord embrace,Give them to preach the word of grace,Sweetly their yielding bosoms move,And melt them with the fire of love.Ministers of God, note the above and let us keep out of the way. For well did Christ say to Peter: "Feed my sheep," the words reached Peter again, but in a sweeter voice: "Peter, feed my lambs," thus we find Peter feeding 00099both the old sheep and the lambs. By so doing he kept out of the way--the way that leads to hell. Then we find him in the way to life eternal. Thus may every heart pray that we as minister for Christ Jesus, keep out of the way of sinner, but stand on the watch wall of Zion, and cry with trumpet voice: "Come back! come back! this is the way to Beulah land; come, let us go to God hand and hand."

SECTION 2.

Sunday, February 23, 1896, 7:30 P.M.Keep the two ways in view, and strive to keep out of the way of sin, and the very host of hell and all its combined forces, that you should never be caught and held spell bound by the damning powers of hell.

Now reader, we have called your attention to the two ways of life. One leads to the land of light, where all will be well with us. But there is one that leads to hell, from whence no traveler has ever returned. Think of the sad case of the rich man in hell, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment. Thus we will remember and keep out of the way. Then keep in the way. Where to? we answer, to Bulah land, where there is peace happiness and joy always in the Holy Ghost. Then let us keep in the paths of peace; always abiding in the Lord, for we read Psalm 125-1-5: "They that trust in the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever." Let us 001010remember that the Lord has done great things for us, and, therefore we should be glad. He has stretched out his mighty power and has set the captive free, the bond has been set at liberty, the lame to walk, the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the dumb to talk. Yes, we thank God and give praise to his Son, that our blinded eyes have been made to see the sunlight of God's eternal love. Let every tongue and nation praise God for the bread of life that comes from above, and fills our souls with an everlasting love. This being true, let us keep in the way of the Lord, for blessed is every one that feareth the Lord, that walketh in his way. Then with the teaching of the spirit of the Lord, I cry with unfathomed love to you and all mankind, keep in the way. In other words strive to enter in at the straight gate, for there is riches untold for those who keep the way of the Lord and make his paths straight. Remember how the Lord Jesus hast said, "ask and it shall be given you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you." Let us reason with ourselves, and see if we have asked, sought or knocked, in the way that we would be accepted with the Lord, or in that way which will keep us in the way to Beulah land. We know from experience to keep in the way, though it be an up hill way, it be a high way, a stony way, a rugged way, and our paths be sometimes overlaid with thorns, sometimes with perils of many kinds, sometimes they come by the way of our dearest friend, and sometimes by the way of our household. But in all of this, our greatest perils come by the way of the moral agent, which violates the known rule or duty of the divine will. It was well said by the philosopher, when he wrote the following lines;"My Jesus as thou wilt,Oh! may thy will be mine,Into thy hand of love,I would my all resign.Through sorrow or through joy,Conduct me as thine own,And help me still to say:My Lord, thy will be done."

Keep in the way, trust in the Lord, with all thine heart, and learn not unto thine own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. See Prov. 3-5-6--"forsake her not and she shall preserve thee: love her ways and she shall keep thee. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in the right paths. See Prov. 4, 6, 11. Reader, when we read the word of God, let us search for her paths that we may be established, keep the way with all diligence, for out of it 001111are the issues of life. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left, but keep thou the way that leads to perfect peace: the way has been constructed and made plain to man's intellect by one who has said, this is the way, walk therein, hear the apostle upon the way. He has said: "Behold, the days come, said the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:"--Heb. 8, 9, 10.--For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their mind and write, (his way), them in their hearts and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people. Keep in the way of wisdom for her paths are the ways of peace. Our blessed Lord has said that all should know of him, from the least to the greatest. Thus we have the way, let us maintain the same. With the law of God we should march to success, and take the world for Jesus, for the law of God is nothing less, nor more than his ways. Take the following by the law of nation we are to understand that code of public instruction which defines the rights, and proscribes the duties of nations in their intercourse with each other. In other words so long as we keep the way of the law, we are absolved by the law. But if we shall flee the way of the law, she condemns us according to the deed or crime we have committed. This being true of the law of our land in which we now live, how much more of the land to which we are traveling, (Beulah land). Thus we should ever keep in the way. You meet a man with his family, and all his possessions in this life; you say, my friend, where are you going? he says in reply, out West; you say do you know the way? he says, well I am not acquainted with the way, but I have been instructed of the way. Before setting out on the journey, you say, well, it looks, or seems, to me that you would forget the first instruction and become a wanderer. He says, yes, I would think so if Is-- Stop! right here and tell me why you have kept the way so well, when you say you were not acquainted with the way; he replies, to you, ah! I receive instruction all along the way, until I reach the end of my journey. You ask him then, what is the result? his answer will be thus, I shall share the blessings of that land and enjoy the pleasures of that land with its inhabitants. You may then say, if there is no pleasure, then what? Well, I shall help to share the miseries of that land, and the woes shall be mine to bear as long as I shall remain in that land; you may ask, was there anything to make you go West? oh, no, there were two ways, I could have gone east, but I chose this way, and its end is misery. Well, reader, are not we 001212travelers too? yes. Well there is two ways to this life, one is up, the other is down, one to heaven, the other to hell; what way have you chosen. If you have preferred the way to Beulah land, keep out of the way that leads to hell, then keep the way to Beulah land, where there is peace for all who keep this way. Christ has said: Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest, see Matt. 11-28, and whether I go, ye know and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest and how can we know the way. Jesus saith unto him. I am the way, and the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the father but by me, see John 14, 4, 6. Now we have the way, then let us keep in the way of the light. Some one may ask, how we know we have the way or how we know that we are in the way? We answer, first we have been so well instructed of the way before we chose this way; second, since we have been brought from the way that leads to hell, and sought the way of the Lord through faith in Christ Jesus; third, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Christ Jesus; fourth, as we travel this way, we inquire the way from the fountain head,(Jesus), as we go and from the first instruction that we had received in our departure from darkness to light. We know by the shedding forth of God's love that fills our hearts with joy and leads us in the ways of truth, and helps us to realized the new birth in Christ, the Lord, having his love shed abroad in our hearts, all along the way; being instructed by the Holy Spirit, we are made to rejoice in the God of our salvation, by this we know we are in the way that leads to eternal life. How shall we enter the way of life eternal, we answer: Repent and believe the gospel of Christ Jesus. How shall we keep the way of life eternal? we will let Jesus answer: "As the father hath loved me, so have I loved you; continue ye in my love; if you keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love even as I have kept my fathers commandments and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you that my joy might remain in you and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, that ye love one another as I have loved you. Greater love than this hast no man, that a man lay down his life for his friends: ye are my friends, if ye do whatever I command you, henceforth I call you not servants, neither have ye chosen me, but I have chosen you, see John 15, 9, 14, and send you forth to bring forth fruit, that your fruit should remain that whatsoever ye shall ask of my father in my name he may give unto thee. Then with the love of God for my guide I cry with all the 001313power that has been given unto me from the Lord: keep in the way that leads to the land of pure daylight. Oh, may we walk in the light of God, looking for a brighter day, when the Lord shall come to gather up his jewels here below. When he shall call for his shepherds to make their reports, may we, the ministers, who are leading his flocks, be ready then to answer, "Master, here am I." Oh, that we would keep out of the way, then keep in the way, for when the angel of the Lord shall be commanded to take down the trumpet of the Lord in that day when he shall place one foot upon the sea and the other upon the land, and call all nations from the four corners of the world, and tell the wind to cease her blowing, and call the sun, moon and stars from their places in the starry decked canopy of God, when he shall call the church militant and the church triumphant together, and when, yes when, they meet in the air, and all heaven takes up the chant St. John began to play, "these are they who came up out of great tribulation and had their robes washed and made white in the blood of the lamb." Then let us keep the way of the Lord, that we too shall stand in the last day, when the trumpet shall sound to wake the nations great and small, Oh, may we be in that throng that St. John saw. Well, in my conclusion, let me say as I touched on the ministerial string and failed to draw the cord as tight as it need to be, let me say to one and all, let trouble come and trials rise and sorrows fall upon thee, temptations gather around you, "yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin," but keep in the way that leads to life eternal. Remember the words of Jesus, how he said, "go teach all nations my command, and lo I am with you always, even to the end." Well we know whatever we sow that shall we reap. Then let us sow the Word of life around our firesides, in the house of God, in our neighborhood, thus toiling for the Master. When he comes he will find us doing what he has commanded us to do. Let us, therefore, watch, pray and labor till the Master come. Dear friends, we walk in the light, in other words we are the light, and when a man, a minister, reads the Bible, a hundred read him. I believe that is what Paul meant when he said we were to be living epistles of Christ, known and read of all men. I would like for some one to tell what our sermons would be, or what good they will do, if we fail to preach the gospel to our people by our holy walk and godly talk, we shall not win them to Christ. Will you think to keep in the way? Yes, God help you to stay in the way of holiness. Let us take warning. While God keeps the 001414upper lights burning as brightly as ever, let us not neglect the lower ones, for God has left us down here to keep the lower lights burning. I believe we are to represent him here as Christ represents us up yonder; if our representative in the courts above is like God has down here on earth I think we would have a poor chance for heaven. Brother, in all things let us carry the shield of faith with us, so that we shall be able to withstand the wilds of the devil. But out of all let us keep our lights in the right place, that people may see there is reality in the religion of Christ and not a sham. I read of a blind man once who sat on the corner of a street in a large city with a lantern beside him. Some one asked him why he had the lantern there as he was blind and the light was the same to him as the darkness. He replied that he had the lantern so that no one would stumble over him. Oh, my brother preachers, let us take the torch of salvation and go into these dark homes and hold up Christ to the poor as the savior of the world. If we would save the world for Christ we must keep in the way. Prepare to meet God. The way to do this is to keep in the way of God, for when they looked to see who was the lion of the tribe of Judah, whom did they see? Lo, the lion was a lamb. God's lion is a lamb. Yes when we are like lambs, God can use us, and we are strong in his service. Let us be Christ-like in our ministerial work, having in us the mind that our blessed Savior had, standing fast in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Let us remember that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. See Gal.5-9. So then let us not weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. In all things let us do good. For we know that God has foreordained that we should glory save in the cross of Christ Jesus, by whom the world is crucified unto him: and as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them and mercy shall keep them in the way to Beulah land. Brethen, we pray that the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

When I survey the wond'rous crossOn which the Prince of Glory died,My richest gain I count but loss,And pour contempt on all my pride.Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,Save in the death of Christ, my God.All the vain things that charm me most,I sacrifice them to his blood.See, from his head, his hands, his feet,Sorrow and love flow mingled down.Did ever such love and sorrow meet,Or thorns compose so rich a crown. Were the whole realm of nature mine,That were a present far too small,Love so amazing, so divineDemands my soul, my life, my all.LET US PRAY.
