Explanation of Headings and Symbols in Personnel Missing South East Asia (PMSEA)


NAME
Last name, first name, middle name or initial.


STAT
Describes the current status of an individual, in two characters:

BB "KIA" Body not recovered
BR Body Recovered
CC Detainee (Civilian Detainee-Released)
EE Escapee
KK Died in Captivity
KR Died in Captivity, Negotiated Remains Returned
MM Missing in Action
NR Negotiated Remains Returned
PP PW
RR Returnee
XX Presumptive Finding of Death
-- Status Not Recorded

I-DATE
The date the individual was lost  is  given in year-month-day order and each is represented by two digits.


SER
A one-letter abbreviation for the individual's parent service:

A ARMY
F AIR FORCE
M MARINE CORPS
N NAVY
P COAST GUARD
V CIVILIAN

RK
Describes current rank of an individual at time of loss. See General information on Enlisted and Officer Ranks


R
Indicates the individual's race.

C Caucasian
M Mongoloid
N Black

COORD
The last known latitude/longitude of the individual s place of loss.


CTRY
The first two letters indicate the country in which an individual was first placed in a missing/captured status: The fourth and fifth letters indicate the country in which an individual was moved to or it indicates that an individual was lost over water "OW."

CB Cambodia
VS South Vietnam
CH China
VS/CB Captured in South Vietnam, Moved to Cambodia
LA Laos
VN North Vietnam
VS/VN Captured in South Vietnam, Moved to North Vietnam
LA/VN Captured in Laos, Moved to North Vietnam
__/OW Lost over the water body adjacent to the country indicated in the first two letters 


ACFT/VEH
The military identifier for the aircraft or vehicle involved in the loss, the type of vehicle or vessel involved in the loss, or on the "ground" when an individual was lost on patrol, engaging the enemy on foot, etc.


REFNO
The JTF-FA reference identification number. This number references a particular  incident and is referred to as the " reference number" or "REFNO."


RET/DATE
The date that the remains of individuals were returned to U.S. control.


EXPLANATION OF NAMES LISTED AND COORDINATES PROVIDED

Those personnel whose Primary Next of Kin (PNOK) denied consent for the public release of Treatment, Location, and Condition data are still included in the PMSEA database. Under the protections of the McCain Bill, the last known latitude and longitude data of the individual's place of loss are not included.
