Background

The Korean Section of the Library of Congress has prepared a bibliography of approximately 4,800 records of books about Korea in English up to 1995 held by the Library of Congress. The Korean Section added local subject terms to these records to provide added value for researchers and improve the quality of service in the library.

Objective

Since the average Library user may not be familiar with the Library of Congress subject headings, the topical term index was created to provide an easy-to-use database of English- language works to a wide range of audience within the Library and the world wide community of scholars. [Example:For History--Japanese Invasions, 1592-1598, we used "Imjin Waeran"]

The topics had been assigned based on Contents of the book. Although this resource is currently limited to English language works, it is a comprehensive and user-friendly bibliographic tool for researchers and scholars interested in Korean studies.

Acknowledgements

The Library of Congress wishes to acknowledge, with appreciation, the support of the Korea Foundation, which provided funding for the compilation of the Korean Bibliography. Sincere thanks to Yeonmi Ahn and Hae-Young Suh for their early participation in the preparation of this project. Special thanks to Sonya Lee and Tony Pierce for sharing their expertise to complete this bibliography.

How to search the Korean Bibliography Database

Transcriptions of Korean

According to the practice of the Library of Congress, the Korean Bibliography uses the McCune-Reischauer romanizing system.

Search

For practical purposes, the word "Korea" in the "Topics" is omitted. [Example: For Korea, History, we used History]

The English name or romanization of the author's name is used when it is known. When unknown, the McCune-Reischauer system is used to romanize the name. The order of a Korean name here is the family name followed by the first name. [Example: Kang, Thomas Hosuck]
