Jigsaw Lesson Plan Guide

A jigsaw is a cooperative learning technique which groups and regroups students to share information.

  • The class is divided into groups. Groups of 3-5 members are best. These are the "Home Groups."
  • Within the Home Groups, each student has a particular assignment. This might be a reading assignment or task.
  • The students with the same assignment come together to read, discuss and complete their task. They come to a consensus on what information is the most important and should be shared with all of the students. These are the "Expert Groups."
  • Next, all students return to their Home Groups and take turns sharing the information from their Expert Groups.

In this way the teacher can ensure that all groups are given similar information and student "experts" have a more complete overview before they present to their Home Groups.
