"My patriotic blood boiled when the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor," recalled Hugh Barker, who was 24 years old and working for Western Electric at the time of the attack. Good to his word, Barker decided to enlist rather than wait to be drafted. After graduating from Officer Candidate School, he was assigned to a base near San Bernadino, California, and given the jobs of signal officer (ensuring that radio equipment used on training aircraft was serviceable) and reclamation officer (responsible for recovering parts from aircraft that crashed in the desert). In England and Northern Ireland, he continued his ascent, becoming company commander just before his unit crossed the English Channel in the wake of D-Day. In the Allies' push toward Germany, he was in charge of installing communication lines in advance of the troops.
