"The burned tail feathers of my P-40. Frank Mears thought I may have set it on fire. No way. I was streaking across the desert looking for a place to hide. Our maintenance crews were able to recover some needed spare parts from this bird."

Jack West and Clermont Wheeler "in the North Compound"
"First row: 2nd from left is Lt. USN John E. Dunn, the first American POW. [Clermont Wheeler] is third from left and 4th from left is 1st Lt. USN John Palmer who joined us in the summer of 1944. Many of the pictures taken in Stalag Luft III were taken by our clandestine photographers."
Map of escape route. "Acquired by Art Ortega, my escape partner, while he was in the Langwasser Stalag. On the back of the map was listed the rations we had obtained for this endeavour: spam, salmon, butter, cheese, sardines, and biscuits were some of the items we started with. We knew we would have to scrounge food stuffs from the fiels to augment these meager rations."
