Service History Note:
Alsos was an Army program to aggressively recover documents and other evidence relating to the German atomic power and weapons programs. Alsos was the code name for the mission. It was based on the Greek word for "Grove," the name of Major General Leslie M. Groves, the military director of the Manhattan Engineer District (the Manhattan Project), one of the principals in developing the special task force.
