Civilian was Chief Gunner on Royal Dutch liner Crijnssen, converted to armed troop transport after German invasion of Holland in 1940; survived sinking of Crijnssen by German U-boat, destroying ship's code books before abandoning ship; served on SS Company (MS Castor) in convoy; did shore duty in Brooklyn, New York, on SS Companion.
