|Excerpt from letter [6/25/1944]
Jun. 25 1944
Actually the past two weeks have been very interesting and very tiring. Long hours, nervous tension and last, but by no means least, the infamous "robot", "buzz-bug", "Doodle-bug", "Chase-me-Charlie", or what ever you want to call it. While these latter are really unimportant, they have a certain supernatural quality and their constant day and night threat is not entirely pleasant. History will look back on them and say they were another German blunder. They provoked the kind of searing rage that was needed to wipe away any trace of war-weariness and to provide the final stimulus --- if any was needed --- to make people determined to carry the fight to a complete finish. "They will pay for this" has been a phrase often repeated in the past ten days.
