of the prisoners of war enclosure with marines mounted on the watch towers. Shoemaker is set in a vast valley surrounded in the distance by a row of purplish hills. The air is pleasant tho [sic] right now it's too hot for our blues.

Of course, we're all a bunch of dejected, sad-looking sailors - disgruntled & tired. That's the usual feeling at a place like this where confusion seems to be the keynote & everyone hankers to be shipped out as fast as possible. However, the war news is wonderful - there's still some question about the Jap surrender - can you imagine how we felt aboard the train when we first heard the news & couldn't get further details for over a day? I understand that liberty has been cancelled & that there's a rumor that outgoing drafts have been either cancelled or postponed.
