Tall Stacks: Celebration of Steamboating Legacy

The project traces the impact the steamboating era and 19th-century river travel has had on the Ohio Valley region, specifically the development of the City of Cincinnati.

Approximately every four years, the City of Cincinnati commemorates its steamboating heritage with a nationally recognized celebration: Tall Stacks. The largest gathering of river boats in America, the Tall Stacks festival is a celebration of Cincinnati's river heritage and the steamboat era in America. River boat cruises, historic re-enactments, and musical entertainment are among the three-day event's attractions. An educational program affiliated with the festival has been implemented in schools throughout the country. Originated in 1988, it is attended by hundreds of thousands of people.
