The Irish of the Fifth District
The Irish are the second largest ethnic group
in the State of New Jersey; approximately 150,000 of Irish
ancestry live in the 5th Congressional District of New Jersey.
The project focuses on Irish organization, people, and events
of Bergen County, which is part of the 5th District.
Videos, photos and written materials document
Irish-Americans in this part of New Jersey. The four videos
included with the project are: 1995 Great Hunger (
An Gorta
Mor) Commemoration; the 1999 St. Patrick's Day Parade in
Bergenfield; the IAUC (Irish American Unity Conference) Brunch
(1999); and the IAUC Convention (1998). Irish American
organizations covered include the Bergen Irish Association; Clan Na
Vale Pipe Band (teaching and practice); St. Joseph's Gaelic
Football Club; the New Jersey Gaelic League; and the Irish American
Unity Conference. Photos and stories feature: Gaelic mass in
Dumont, Irish dancing schools and Project Children picnic. Written
reports and personal letters will focus on: the Sisters of St.
Joseph of Peace; history of Irish organizations in the 5th
Congressional district; life in the district as told by immigrant
Irish-Americans, including military service, why they came here,
community service and children and grandchildren.
