Farmville Dogwood Festival
Held annually the last weekend in April, this
event coincides with the blooming of the abundant dogwood
trees in Farmville. The hub of the festival is the town
commons, where a tent holds 48 arts and crafts booths, and the
music of country, gospel, and rock bands issues from a gazebo.
Dancers from the Farmville Dance Academy perform on stage each
year. Numerous activities are provided for children, including
a petting zoo, puppet shows, storytelling, art experiments,
and karaoke with children's songs. The town's antique fire
engine is taken out of storage to provide rides to the public.
Civil War re-enactors make camp and demonstrate their
weaponry. Both non-profit and commercial vendors sell their
wares and food. Held since 1988, the volunteer-run event drew
30,000 visitors in 1999.
