Pride in Diversity: The Many Voices of the 9th District

The 9th Congressional District of Illinois is one of the most diverse congressional districts in the entire country. The district is represented by virtually every ethnicity, including Russian, Indian, Polish, Pakistani, Latino, Haitian, and Cambodian. Additionally, the religious diversity of the district is incredible, with Jews, Muslims, and Christians all living, working and participating together in their communities. In addition to religious and ethnic diversity, the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) community also heavily influences the 9th Congressional District. The tolerance and respect for difference that is taught and learned everywhere from synagogues and churches to supermarkets and parks is visible in every neighborhood and creates a sense of pride and a feeling of community that is rivaled few places around the country. The project is represented by three events in the 9th District: the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival, held the third weekend of July, celebrating its 15th anniversary in the year 2000; the Skokie Festival of Cultures, held annually in May, celebrating its 10th anniversary in the year 2000; and June Pride Month of the GLBT community.
