Douglas County's Local Legacy
This celebration of the community's logging
tradition is chronicled by high school juniors, who interviewed
local elders, collected photographs, and conducted research at the
Douglas County Museum Library and in local newspapers.
Documentation includes ten student reports on various historical
aspects of the community, from timbering to floods, the local
market, and a family history.
Douglas County, established in 1852, is named for
U.S. Senator Steven A. Douglas (1813-1861), an enthusiastic
supporter of Oregon, who once ran for President against Abraham
Lincoln. The county, which extends from the Pacific Ocean to the
Cascade Mountains, contains nearly 2.8 million acres of commercial
forest lands. Approximately 25 percent of the county's labor force
is employed in the forest products industry, which includes
sawmills and veneer plants. The County Parks Department, the first
in Oregon, has more than 50 parks in its system. More than half of
county land is owned by the federal government, and is managed by
the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land management.
