Thunder in the Valley

The "Valley District", formed in May 1861, was located in the "upper part of the Lower Shenandoah Valley," and was the bread basket of the Confederacy and the location of the main travel route north and south. Of any area, Jefferson County, West Virginia, in the Valley District saw the most military action. "Thunder in the Valley," an annual event sponsored by the Charles Town Heritage Association, commemorates its Civil War heritage through a series of events including formation of a wagon train to Charles Town, the setting up of a replica Confederate camp, a military ball, battle re-enactments, and the "Blue/Grey Classic Horse Race."
