Multi-Fest

This family-oriented, multi-cultural festival of Charleston, West Virginia, celebrated its tenth anniversary in 1999. Born as a result of African-American disillusionment at being excluded from the planning and administration of a local Charleston event, Multi-Fest emerged as a culturally inclusive late summer activity which attracts visitors from numerous states as well as from the immediate area. Audiences, performers and vendors representing differing racial, ethnic, and cultural origins gather on the grounds of the state capitol for three days each August to celebrate diversity and commune in true fellowship and mutual respect. Festival highlights include a kick-off dinner dance, performances featuring a variety of music, from gospel to jazz, reggae to rap; a youth talent show; educational and public-service exhibits; and vendors selling multi-cultural food and wares. Project documentation includes a report, photos, and programs from the inception of the festival.
