Local Colors, City of Roanoke
A year-round celebration of cultural awareness in
Roanoke that recognizes and embraces people of diverse origins,
races, and ethnic backgrounds. The event culminates annually in the
spring with a festive day of sharing and learning through music,
arts, crafts, storytelling, food, an international fashion show,
language, and goodwill.
The celebration began in 1990, as a means to draw
people to the downtown area, and was sponsored by Downtown Roanoke,
Inc. and
The Roanoke Times. Featuring only four cultures
in 1990, the festival has grown such that in the year 2000
immigrants representing fifty-two countries will participate.
Project materials include news clippings, photographs, a videotape,
and a report.
