Built on Living Waters

Monroe County and Rochester owe their existence and growth to the Genesee River, the Genesee Valley Canal, and the Erie Canal. The river's power fueled a burgeoning mill town that became New York's third largest city, while the joining of the canal waters secured the area's access to markets, people, and ideas. The 175th anniversary of the "wedding of the waters" will be celebrated in 2000 when the World Canal Conference meets in Rochester. Boats still travel the waterways, including a replica canal boat named the Sam Patch.
