Mark Twain and Elmira College

Elmira College is the home of the Center for Mark Twain Studies. Twain's wife was a member of the Elmira class of 1864. Elmira College was the first college founded for women in the United States which offered degrees equivalent to those offered to men. Twain summered with his wife's relatives on their Quarry Farm outside the town for 20 years, writing Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, A Tramp Abroad, Tom Sawyer, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court while there. The farm now serves as a temporary home for scholars visiting the Center.
