The Albert Music Hall
(Waretown, New Jersey)
Built specifically to house the regular
Saturday night performance of "Sounds of the Jersey Pines,"
the Albert Music Hall in Waretown is the scene of traditional
music gatherings with an interesting local history. Today,
professional and local musicians on fiddle, guitar, banjo,
bass fiddle, mandolin, spoons, and wash tub play in rotation
every 20 minutes. Thirty years ago, a handful of musicians and
friends would gather every Saturday night in a small, secluded
hunting cabin known as the Home Place, owned by Joe Albert and
his brother George.
The project documents the story of how the Home Place
music sessions grew in reputation and attendance, lapsed briefly,
and finally found a permanent home in the Albert Music Hall through
the efforts of the Pinelands Cultural Society. The society's goals
include preservation and stimulation of interest in the Pinelands
musical heritage.
