Winnebago Pow Wow

Held in Winnebago the last week in July, this five-day celebration honors the last true war-chief of the Ho-Chunk people, Little Priest (Hoonk-Hoo-No-Kaw), who died from battle wounds in 1866. The first celebration was held that same year at a council of all the Winnebago clans. Today it honors all Winnebago veterans of war. The featured events are traditional costumed dances and ceremonial songs. There are contests for prizes among dancers, singers, and princess candidates. There is also inter-tribal dancing. The event is documented in a videotape, 30 photographs, two audio cassettes, and three official programs. Documentation of Winnebago history leading up to the death of Little Priest is also included.
