100th Annual Celebration by Icelanders
Held July 30 through August 2, 1999 in the small
town of Mountain, this celebration of Icelandic heritage hosted
over 10,000 visitors from the United States, Canada, and Iceland,
including the President of Iceland and his daughter. A parade of
more than 200 entries, ceremonial gift exchanges, several music
concerts, and a Viking encampment were among the attractions. The
prize-winning play
In the Wake of the Storm, written by a
local woman about the early settlement of the area by Icelandic
immigrants, was performed four times to full houses. The centennial
is documented on videotape and in text and photographs.
