National Hollerin' Contest

This event is held each year in late June in the small town of Spivey's Corner. It is based on the custom, prevalent among country folk of an earlier era, of loudly calling across the fields to neighbors as the only available means of communication from a distance. In the era of the cell phone, this tradition has disappeared, but it is preserved in the Hollerin' Contest. There are separate categories for men, ladies, and children, as well as a whistling contest and a conch shell and hunting horn blowing contest. Musical entertainment, games, exhibits, an arts and crafts show, and plenty of food round out the day. Sponsored by the Spivey's Corner Volunteer Fire Department, the contest raises funds for that organization.
