Michigan Barn & Farmstead Survey:
4-H Youth Project
This survey is a study of vernacular farm
architecture undertaken by 4-H youth and their leaders. Using a
guidebook developed at Michigan State University Museum under its
Folkpatterns program, 4-H clubs photographed and cataloged the
barns and silos of their respective counties. The club members not
only preserved an aspect of their agricultural heritage that is now
disappearing, they also gained a greater awareness and appreciation
of their past. Some clubs had opportunities to display their
projects at county fairs and other events, thus enhancing awareness
in their communities. Copies of the photographs and accompanying
text for four counties are included in the project submitted to
Local Legacies.
