                    <mods:abstract>Chicago composer and educator Arne Oldberg (1874-1962)exerted considerable influence upon the musical life of the Midwest as Professor of Composition and head of the piano department at Northwestern University from 1899 to 1941.  Oldberg's works were frequently performed by leading orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.  Among his most notable pupils was the composer Howard Hanson.</mods:abstract>
