- Abstract
- The New Dance Group was founded in 1932 "for the purpose of developing and creating group and mass dances expressive of the working class and its revolutionary upsurge." The organization was formed in New York City by six students of German expressionist dancer/choreographer, Mary Wigman. The New Dance Group offered low-cost classes in modern dance and, during the next ten years, satellite schools were inaugurated in other cities. In 1935 Martha Graham's technique was added, followed by others, including Doris Humphrey, Lester Horton, and Merce Cunningham. By the end of the 1940s, the dance classes included ballet, modern, ethnic, and composition classes. The New Dance Group was one of the many left-wing companies in the 1930s that became part of the Workers Dance League, which sponsored concerts in trade union halls and theaters that encouraged social protest. Choreographers whose work was supported by the New Dance Group include Jane Dudley, Daniel Nagrin, Pearl Primus, Sophie Maslow, Donald McKayle, Anna Sokolow, Talley Beatty, and Jean Erdman.
