                    <mods:abstract>Howard Ashman is best remembered as the lyricist for the Disney animated musicals The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, as well as the stage and film musical Little Shop of Horrors--collaborations with the composer Alan Menken.  Ashman was the artistic director of the WPA Theater, and was also lyricist, librettist and director for several other works, including, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, composed by Menken, and Smile!, composed by Marvin Hamlisch.</mods:abstract>
