In 1940 musicologist Charles Seeger (1886-1979) donated to the Library a small collection of material relating chiefly to the activities of the Workers Music League (WML), an affiliate of the International Music Bureau which was established in New York City in 1931. Under the slogan "Music for the Masses," the WML guided the musical aspects of the revolutionary workers movement and undertook the publication of protest songs and marches. Music and important theoretical statements were written for the WML by the Composers' Collective of New York City and issued, in some cases, under the pseudonyms "Carl Sands" and "L. E. Swift." The Seeger gift includes WML songbooks and sheet music from England, the United States, and the U.S.S.R. that may have been distributed through the organization, and related concert programs, periodicals, news clippings, and notes.
Songbooks, sheet music, concert programs, periodicals, news clippings, and miscellaneous notes.
