<mods:abstract>Helen McGehee joined the Martha Graham Dance Company in the 1940s, became a leading dancer in 1954, and remained with the Company for more than thirty years. She created roles in many of Graham's works including Night Journey (1947); Clytemnestra (1958); Acrobats of God (1960); and Phaedra (1967). McGehee also took over many of Graham's original roles. In addition to her contributions as a dancer, McGehee designed costumes for Graham's One More Gaudy Night and Clytemnestra. Although principally known as a Graham dancer, McGehee also created her own body of choreographic work and her best-known choreographies include The Only Jealousy of Emer (1967); La Intrusia (1952); and El Retablo de Maese Pedro (1969). In 1950 McGehee married artist Umaña, whose work is represented in numerous museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; and Harvard University.</mods:abstract>
