Paul Löwenberg Collection of Lanner Strauss Materials collection 4 ft. The Löwenberg Collection, purchased in 1938, contains first editions of nearly all the works of the Lanner and Strauss families, the nineteenth-century "waltz kings" of Vienna. These rival families produced six composers who excelled in the writing and conducting of dance music: Josef Lanner (1801-1843), August Lanner (1834-1855), Johann Strauss the elder (1804-1849), Johann Strauss the younger (1825-1899), Josef Strauss (1827-1870), and Eduard Strauss (1835-1916). Paul Löwenberg of Vienna assembled the over sixteen hundred published piano scores in the collection and meticulously compiled four volumes of lists and clippings as background information. The unbound sheet music is broken down by composer and type (such as waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and marches) and filed by title within each category.
