<mods:abstract>Adolph Bolm (Adol'f Rudol'fovich Bolm; born 25 September 1884 in Saint Petersburg, died 18 April 1951 in Hollywood, California), Russian-American ballet dancer, teacher, and choreographer, joined the corps de ballet of the Maryinsky Theater in 1903. In 1908-1909 he partnered noted ballerina Anna Pavlova and participated in Serge Diaghilev's first season (1909) of Russian ballet and opera in Paris. He was a member of the Ballets Russes de Serge Diaghilev until 1917, performing roles for premieres of choreographer Michel Fokine's Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor (1909), The Firebird (1910), and Petrouchka (1911). In 1913 he choreographed the Persian Dances in Khovanshchina for Ballets Russes de Serge Diaghilev and in 1916 he created Sadko, also for Diaghilev. He settled in the U.S. in 1917 and formed his own company, the Ballet Intime, a chamber ensemble that appeared at a number of venues, including the Hollywood Bowl. Among his choreographies are The Birthday of the Infanta (produced for the Chicago Civic Opera in 1919) and Krazy Kat (1922). His work was mounted on a variety of dance companies, including Chicago Allied Arts Ballet; San Francisco Ballet; and Ballet Theatre (New York). In 1928 he was commissioned by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge and the Library of Congress to provide the choreography for Igor Stravinsky's Apollon Musagète (later titled Apollo and re-choreographed by George Balanchine for the Ballets Russes de Serge Diaghilev).</mods:abstract>
