Composer George Gershwin (1898-1937) and his lyricist brother Ira (1896-1983) created some of the most memorable songs of the twentieth century--"I Got Rhythm," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "The Man I Love," "Embraceable You," and many, many others. Working with author DuBose Heyward, they wrote the great American opera Porgy and Bess. And although they are widely remembered as a songwriting team, George Gershwin wrote several singularly American concert works, including An American in Paris and Rhapsody In Blue, and both brothers also worked with other collaborators to produce scores of other distinguished songs. The George and Ira Gershwin Collection contains music manuscripts (ranging from sketches and early drafts to finished scores) for their standards as well as for songs which were never even completed, much less sung or published. There is also a wealth of biographical material contained in the correspondence and the scrapbooks, which present nearly a complete record of the Gershwins' lives as they were chronicled in the contemporary press. - Contents Note
