<mods:abstract>Russian-born composer and pianist Nikolai Medtner (1880-1951) sought to create works that incorporated elements of both Classical and Romantic musical styles. While he primarily composed works for solo piano, he also produced at least 107 songs for voice and piano, as well as three sonatas for violin and piano. As a pianist, he attained great success throughout Europe during the first decades of the twentieth century, and after 1902 also began to teach at the Moscow Conservatory for extended periods. In 1921 Medtner lived in Berlin, then Paris, before settling in London in 1935.</mods:abstract>
