<mods:abstract>This collection contains more than 150 prompt books for German operettas dating from the second to the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The books, some handcopied and others published, reflect the contemporary operetta repertory in Germany and Austria. Among the names of librettists and composers are the frequent collaborators Richard Genée, F. Zell (Camillo Walzel), and Johann Strauss the Younger; a prompt book of the latter’s Simplicius is among those in the collection. Many of the books link to important theater agencies such as Gustav Lewy and August Cranz. Most contain a list of production dates penciled inside the front cover.</mods:abstract>
