<mods:abstract>Florian F. Mueller joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1927 as assistant first oboe, then became principal oboist in 1931. He played under Frederick Stock, Artur Rodzinsky, Rafael Kubelik and Fritz Reiner, and guest composer-conductors Maurice Ravel, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Igor Stravinsky and Zoltan Kodaly. As a composer he heard some of his works performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. After 27 years with the Orchestra he moved to the University of Michigan to teach oboe and play in the Faculty Woodwind Quintet and the Baroque Trio. He was one of the major developers and proponents of the "American school" of oboe playing. Critics from the period praise his ability to ornament, his "ravishing tone," and his "nearly flawless technique, breath control and phrasing."</mods:abstract>
