<mods:abstract>The Edward and Clara Steuermann Collection consists primarily of the music and writings of Edward Steuermann, and the correspondence of Edward and Clara Steuermann. Edward studied piano with Vilem Kurz and Ferruccio Busoni, and composition with Engelbert Humperdinck and Arnold Schoenberg. Steuermann emigrated to the United States in 1938, where he continued to perform, teach, and compose. He taught at Juilliard from 1952 to 1964. Clara Silvers Steuermann studied piano and composition at the City College in Los Angeles. Upon receiving her master's degree in 1944, she moved to New York to study piano with Edward Steuermann. They were married in 1949. Between 1951 and 1964, Clara worked at the Juilliard Opera Theater and earned a Master of Library Science. Clara was active in the Music Library Association and the international music-library community. The collection includes holograph scores or sketches of most of Steuermann's compositions and many of his arrangements and transcriptions, general and family correspondence of Edward and Clara, manuscript and typescript essays by Edward, and transcripts of excerpts from Edward's letters. Some photographs are included. There are four boxes of material concerning the International Federation of Music Libraries (IFLA).</mods:abstract>
