<mods:abstract>Peter J. Lund, Jr., became interested in the history of the zither through his grandfather who had taught the instrument in Germany in the late 1800s. As a youth in Ohio he studied the instrument and began acquiring music. While working for the U.S. government in the 1950s he went to Germany where he searched for zither players and music, often buying whole collections. He notes in his letter to the Library "While the zither has always been played in Europe as a house-instrument for folk-music, there was a time known as the Golden Age of Zither when there thrived a number of great virtuosos who composed serious works for zither and improved the state of the art .... a cross section of this type of music can be found with this collection."</mods:abstract>
