John Alden Carpenter Collection, 1891-1961 Span: 1891-1961 Bulk: 1900-1949 English collection 5 ft. 12 boxes John Alden Carpenter (1876-1951) studied with J.K. Paine at Harvard University, Edward Elgar in Rome, and for four years with Bernhard Ziehn in Chicago. Like his father, Carpenter was by profession in the shipping business, serving as vice-president of the family firm, the George B. Carpenter & Co., until he retired in 1936 to devote himself entirely to music. Carpenter was a highly successful composer in his day, being named a Knight of the French Legion of Honor (1921) and receiving such honors as the Gold Medal of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He also received honorary degrees from Harvard University, Northwestern University, the University of Wisconsin, and the American Conservatory of Music. Of particular note in the collection are the numerous manuscripts of his songs, and the photographs and watercolors of the sets and costumes of his stage productions. More than 150 holograph manuscripts of Carpenter's songs, orchestral, chamber, and dramatic works; printed scores with the composer's annotations and alterations; writings and personal papers; correspondence to and from the composer; photographs and watercolors; programs, scrapbooks and miscellaneous clippings.
