- Abstract
- Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) is known primarily for his artistry as a violinist, but he is also worthy of note as a composer. Born in Vienna, he began violin lessons at the age of four with his father. He gained admission to the Musikverein Konservatorium three years later. He gave his first performance there at the age of nine. Kreisler then studied at the Paris Conservatoire for two years. He left there in 1887 after sharing the premier prix with four other violinists, all some ten years older. From the age of 12 he had no further violin instruction. In December of 1899 he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic under Arthur Nikisch, a performance which marked the beginning of an international career. Included among the holographs in this collection are several works of the famous Klassische Manuskripte series, a set of 14 pieces for violin and piano that Kreisler claimed were his transcriptions of classical works until in 1935 he admitted that they were his own original compositions.
