<mods:abstract>In 1903, Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) gave the Library of Congress the manuscript of his Zweite (indianische) Suite, op. 48, a gift that inspired Music Division chief Oscar Sonneck to begin collecting the celebrated composer's original music manuscripts and first editions. After MacDowell's untimely death in 1908, his widow, Marian MacDowell (1857-1956), promised his papers to the Library. Marian MacDowell accumulated her own impressive archive through her work for the MacDowell Colony, the artists' colony the MacDowells founded in 1907 on their farm in Peterborough, New Hampshire, which continues today as a leading artists' residency program. Her papers join those of her husband to form the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection. The collection is organized into three sections: the papers of Edward MacDowell, the papers of Marian MacDowell, and the early papers of the MacDowell Colony.</mods:abstract>
