Miller Collection Span: 16th century to 20th century Bulk: c. 1700 English, German, French collection 149 boxes The Miller Collection contains nearly 1,700 flutes and other wind instruments, statuary, iconography, books, music, trade catalogs, tutors, patents, and other materials mostly related to the flute. It includes both Western and nonwestern examples from around the world, with at least 460 European and American instrument makers represented. The collection is especially strong in 19th century keywork, acoustical innovations, and experimental designs. Materials in the Flute Vault include 1756 flutes and other wind instruments; in addition there are roughly 1,000 pieces of iconography and 66 statues, 1,000 empty flute cases, 19 boxes of correspondence, 210 boxes containing nearly 3,000 unsorted photographs, 1,000 sorted photographs, and 3 archive boxes of patent trademarks for wind instruments.
