<mods:abstract>Arnold T. Schwab was born in Los Angeles in 1922, and spent most of his career as professor of English at California State University, Long Beach. Dr. Schwab developed an interest in Edward and Marian MacDowell in the 1960s while working on a biography of the critic James G. Huneker, a great admirer of Edward MacDowell's music. For almost thirty years, Schwab collected material for a biography of Mrs. MacDowell, encompassing a history of the MacDowell Colony, the artists' colony that the MacDowells established on their farm in New Hampshire in 1907, shortly before Edward MacDowell's death. The book was never completed due to other writing projects, and in 2000, Schwab donated his research collection to the Library of Congress to join its already significant MacDowell holdings.</mods:abstract>
