"Cradle Song" by Edward MacDowell [article]
Cradle Song, 1890. Edward MacDowell, 1860-1908. MacDowell Collection, box 16, folder 24. Music Division, Library of Congress.
The text is by MacDowell after a German poem by Peter Cornelius (1824-1874). A lullaby, this brief work is representative of a quintessential American male glee club song: a cappella, homophonic, closely voiced, regular phrases, heartfelt, and tender. Chromatic motion often occurs against pedal tones. Interest is found more in the overall harmonic effect than in the melody. MacDowell dedicated the work to the Loring Club, San Francisco's oldest male chorus, founded in 1876.
