Sharon Robinson [biography]
Cellist Sharon Robinson, known for the part she plays in the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio (Joseph Kalichstein, piano, and Jaime Laredo, violin, form the other two parts), also plays frequently in recital or as a soloist with an orchestra. In addition, she conducts master classes worldwide and participates in a great variety of summer music festivals, including the Aspen, Spoleto, Mostly Mozart, South Bank (London), and Autumn (Prague) Festivals. She has been a frequent guest on network television, appearing on programs such as CBS's Sunday Morning and NBC's Today Show and Tonight Show. Her live and recorded performances of a repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the modern have garnered numerous awards--among them the Avery Fisher Recital Award, the Leventritt Foundation Award, and the Piatigorsky Memorial Award--and a Grammy nomination.
The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio made its first appearance in 1977, at former President Carter's inaugural celebrations at the White House. The original members of the group remained together over the years, and in 2002 Musical America named them the Trio Ensemble of the Year. The group is known for its ability to combine with other players and ensembles, utilizing the various performers in any way required. For example, the Trio played a series of concerts with the Guarneri String Quartet in which everything Brahms ever composed for piano and strings was featured. At other times, the Trio performs as a unit, supported by an accompanying orchestra or other large ensemble, as in Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's Triple Concerto, for violin, cello, piano, and orchestra, which was written specifically for the Trio.
Sharon Robinson and Jaime Laredo were married contemporaneously with the creation of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio. In honor of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, composer Richard Danielpour wrote In the Arms of the Beloved, a concerto for violin and cello. Laredo and Robinson premiered the work in April 2002 with the Iris Orchestra, conducted by Michael Stern, and recorded it for the Arabesque label.
Born in 1949 into a musical family (her father played string bass, her mother, violin; her siblings are string players, one and all), Ms. Robinson first performed publicly at age seven. A native of Houston, Texas, she graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1968 and studied at the University of Southern California from 1968 to 1970. She earned a bachelor's degree from the Peabody Conservatory in 1972, and made her New York performing debut in 1974.
