Significance: The North Avenue Viaduct is one of Milwaukee's largest spans. Designed by J.C. Pinney, the reinforced concrete bridge employs a complex open spandrel, ribbed arch support system. The structure originally contained detailed neoclassical ornamentation and large comfort stations at either end. All have since been removed. The viaduct provides an extremely important Milwaukee River crossing for the north end of the city, linking residential areas with the business districts. The bridge's design and construction is typical, state of the art for this time period.
