Significance: The bridge was apparently the first non-military highway bridge across the Tennessee River. Designed by the renowned engineer, Edwin Thatcher, it played a major role in the economic development of southeastern Tennessee. Comprised of six camelback through trusses and an iron viaduct, the bridge comprised a major feat of structural engineering.
