Significance: The railway was the first rapid transit line erected in Philadelphia at the turn of the century. Prior to its construction, electrified surface lines traversed city and suburban streets providing transportation between neighborhood. With the completion of the elevated railway, passengers were able to enjoy a swift ride into Center City from their residences in outlying areas.
