Significance: The McCord Creek Bridge is associated with the Columbia River Highway, a National Historic Landmark. Built over a ten-year period (1913-1922), the Columbia River Highway is nationally significant as a representation of cliff-face road building applied to automobile highway construction. Constructed as a scenic tour route from Portland east through the Columbia River Gorge, the highway was unparalleled in the Pacific Northwest in terms of its engineering, design, quality, length, age, natural setting and recreational use. The McCord Creek Bridge is located in Multnomah County, on the oldest section of this highway. In 1950, the old highway was bypassed with a new interstate highway (now Interstate 84). At this time, the McCord Creek Bridge, a reinforced-concrete deck-girder structure, underwent major modification, including deck widening, addition of new bents, placement of diagonal members in the original bents, and replacement of the railings. The McCord Creek Bridge was then replaced in 1998 with a new bridge spanning McCord Creek.
